Poeta y narrador inglés. En su juventud, Southey abrazó con entusiasmo los ideales de la Revolución francesa, al igual que Samuel Taylor Coleridge, con quien desarrolló una estrecha amistad a partir de 1794. Como Coleridge, se fue volviendo conservador con el tiempo. Hacia 1799 se dedicó por completo a la literatura y más tarde se vio obligado a escribir infatigablemente para poder mantener a la familia de Coleridge además de la propia. En 1813 fue nombrado poeta laureado. Aunque su prosa es un ejemplo de maestría por su claridad y transparencia, es poco leída en la actualidad. Se puede comprobar en obras como Nelson (1813), Life of Wesley [Vida de Wesley] (1820) y The Doctor [El doctor] (1834–47), un texto misceláneo fantástico y digresivo.
